Dear Bird Lover,
PASSION !
Yes ! That's what it's all about !
I started keeping birds more than 20 years ago, and my love of birds continues to grow.
Having kept many different species over the years, I took one very important decision a few years ago, that was that I must specialise in those species that I love and care about the most.
This is the only way to reach your goal and breed the very best quality birds.
The level of competition at shows here in Holland and Belgium is very competitive, so to reach the top you have to work hard and be patient.
Just look at the past show results from the big International Shows, such as the World Show and you will see what I mean : birds from Belgium and Holland consistently take the top honours.
HOW DID WE ACHIEVE IT ?
Well, as we are dealing with a show standard for every species, every mutation, our group of breeders took the decision not to just take short cuts to try and achieve our aim but to take the longer but more sure way !
Long term strategy was very important for us, you need patience when breeding to achieve your ultimate aim, which is what its all about !
Why take the often taken short cut and achieve little improvement. To achieve the best results sometimes you have to go 2 steps back in order to go 1 step forward. A well thought out breeding plan is a must ! Decide before you start breeding what you are wanting to achieve, not just for this season but over the next 5 years.
So we became “Experimental Breeders” … with our goal to breed a championship winning bird.
To achieve this, we put mutations together that gave us lots of birds, many of which were not suitable for future breeding ... but, some of them were. After a vigorous culling, less than 10 % of the offspring were used for breeding, the following season, and so on, year after year.
Slowly the quality of our birds improved and now we were on top of the Belgian and Dutch show scene, with many different species.
Just by thinking, hard, long, and differently !
Many of our group give lectures to specialised societies, but we are all still learning and continuously improving our knowledge. To become a top breeder is not too difficult, but to stay at the top, is !
Several of our breeders are now attempting to breed difficult, rarer species i.e. Dufresne Waxbill (Estrilda melanotis melanotis), Eastern Quailfinch (Ortygospiza atricollis muelleri) and Rosy Twinspot (Hypargos margaritatus), before they become lost species. They are employing the same tactics as they used to breed the more common species and they are making progress. Just imagine how we felt to breed our first Opal Cordon Bleu and Purple Grenadiers !
Over the last few years our Vet has became a very important partner to our group. We looked for the best and found Belgian’s leading avian vet Mr. Peter Coutteel whom we asked to join us. Preparing the birds on a scientific base for breeding, by having a general check-up each year; looking for diseases etc. became part of the game when dealing with our hobby. Importantly, none of our breeders simply give their birds all year round medicines or antibiotics as this does nothing but destroy the bird’s immune systems which then makes them very susceptible to any viruses that are going around. Our specialised Vet is a great believer in natural seeds, herbs etc to solve nature’s problems and use probiotics where necessary to boast a bird’s immune system when needed.
Finally, after many years of hard work, we can offer, for sale, very good exhibition quality birds and/or rare species in a huge range of varieties / mutations.
After our many years of hard work and ultimately reaching our goal, our breeders have agreed to sell their youngsters to breeders outside of Belgium and Holland. That is why you're able to buy from Bird-Export top quality birds, even world champion’s.
We see from traditional bird dealers, the normal quality of birds that they export which can only be described as pet shop quality, where 'quantity' rules. Nothing wrong with that, if that’s the quality you are happy with. If you are however interested in breeding quality exhibition birds then start off with the best stock you can afford. You will be surprised that the difference in price between inferior and Top Quality stock is not much.
The right stock will give you quicker results, increased demand and better prices for your youngsters. You will also probably not need to keep as many birds, so in doing so actually save you money on seed etc .
New specialised breeders from Belgian and Holland are occasionally invited to join our exclusive group. These breeders must have a proven breeding and exhibition pedigree in their specialised species of bird. This has created a real close group of breeders with a common ideal : to breed the best possible birds. These breeders spend many hours in their breeding rooms simply watching their birds, pairing, nest building, seeing the wonder of hatching, watching their youngsters develop, training for shows, etc.
SHIPPING
All birds are shipped in a professional way, a lot of care and investigation has been gone into our transport boxes.
It's indeed very important to us that our birds arrive at their destination in the very best condition.
Our birds get a complete health check-up before shipping. They are checked 3 times, by our Vet; by an independent Vet at the airport of departure and by a local Vet at the arrival airport.
If you would like to see digital photos of your birds that are actually being shipped … just ask !
Using a digital camera we can show you what you are getting, just to “wet your appetite” !!
At the end of the day everybody should be happy : you receive good show quality and/or rare birds, we are happy to have been of service to you .
Our hobby is so exciting, but above all … SO MUCH FUN !
Best Regards,
